Washington Association of Vehicle Subagents (WAVS) is the unified voice for Washington's vehicle licensing Subagents. We advocate for the vital role subagents play in delivering essential licensing services, ensuring strong partnerships with our partners, such as the Department of Licensing, our County Auditors, and auto dealers across the state. We work to educate legislators, promote public awareness, and uphold the highest standards of business practices to strengthen and protect the industry.

In Washington, a vehicle subagent is an individual(s) recommended by their county auditor and appointed by the Department of Licensing through an open competitive business proposal process.

Each subagent office is a business entity with unique owners and employees. These subagencies operate their small businesses to perform vehicle and vessel licensing services for the DOL and Auditors, but are not a branch of either state agency.

Each of the 134 Washington subagents work as independent contractors with the DOL and 39 County Auditors, paying for all of their own business expenses and costs out of the revenue earned through service fees. Subagent offices offer employment to local citizens who become contributing taxpayers in their community, supporting our grocery stores, child care centers, and many other local businesses.
